The Guardian reports that Swedish environmentalists are criticizing the government's plan to build ten new nuclear reactors. Sweden currently has six nuclear reactors in operation, which produce about 30% of Sweden's electricity. The environmentalists argue that additional power should come from solar and wind power, rather than nuclear.
These anti-nuclear attitudes among environmentalists is what is wrong with the movement. Wind and solar are fine, but they are not totally reliable, depending on the weather. Nuclear can provide baseline backup without producing greenhouse gases. The Swedish government has the right idea. Hopefully they can push ahead despite environmental opposition.
