The Wall Street Journal describes a proposal to put solar panels in outer space and transmit the power to the ground. The main way to get the power to the ground is by microwaves. It has so far only been tested in tiny experiments. I am skeptical of this idea, as I am of using electricity to make steel and cement, described in the previous post.
Producing solar power from space would require huge solar panels in orbit, and I predict that environmentalists will oppose transmitting huge amounts of power by microwaves, although the article says the microwaves will be much less intense than those in a microwave oven. Environmentalists are responsible for the unjustified opposition to nuclear power, which has much more promise for producing large amounts of power.
