Germany is set to phase out its three remaining nuclear power plants at the end of this year, Der Spiegel notes in an octadeca-bylined article, but some want the plants to stay online as Germany (and Europe, more broadly) seeks to cover for a shortfall of Russian natural gas in what figures to be a difficult winter. Some still oppose nuclear energy, but it no longer animates major environmentalist groups or movements, and some see it as a workable carbon-free solution.
